Executive Order 14038, signed on 9 August 2021, expanded US sanctions on Belarus beyond the 2006 authority it supplements. Citing the fraudulent August 2020 presidential election, subsequent repression and the disruption of international civil aviation, it lets the Treasury block persons operating in named sectors of the Belarusian economy, including defence, security, energy, potash, tobacco, construction and transportation.
